A pattern cutting and sewing website for J&O Studio
J&O Studio is a working pattern room and sample studio in Northfleet, near Gravesend. It serves three quite different groups of people from one address, and that was the problem the website had to solve.
The business
J&O Studio has been at the cutting table since 2012 — fourteen years, about twenty-five minutes from south-east London. The studio does pattern cutting, grading, toiling and fitting, fabric cutting, sampling and small production runs for designers and brands. It also does alterations, bespoke dressmaking, bridal and prom fitting, repairs, curtains and blinds, embroidery and sewing machine repairs for people locally. And it takes bulk and contract work: tote bags, custom t-shirts, aprons, uniforms and tunics, promotional textiles and cut-make-and-trim.
What the site had to do
Three audiences, one studio. A fashion designer looking for a pattern cutter, someone in Gravesend who needs a dress taking in, and a company ordering three hundred branded tote bags are all valuable customers — but each one needs to see something different within a few seconds of landing. A single undifferentiated list of services would have lost all three.
What we built
- Three doors on the homepage. Right below the header, a visitor picks the one that describes them: a designer or brand, someone with an item to alter or mend, or a business needing a quantity made. Each leads into its own set of pages.
- A menu built the same way. Services are grouped as Studio & trade, In Gravesend and Bulk & contract, rather than one long alphabetical list, so the structure matches how people actually arrive.
- A page for every service. Pattern cutting, grading, toiling and fitting, fabric cutting, sampling, production runs, alterations, dressmaking, bridal, curtains, embroidery, machine repairs and each bulk product get their own page — because “pattern grading” and “curtain making near me” are completely different searches.
- The work, shown large. Garments fill the first screen. In this trade the photographs are the argument, so they are given the room to make it.
- The process, plainly. A drawing becomes a pattern, then a calico toile, then a fitting, then a delivered run — so a designer who has never commissioned a pattern before knows what they are buying and where they can join in.
- The practical details up front: the Burch Road address, free parking outside, opening hours for walk-ins, the phone number and a quote form.
Built to be found
The page title leads with what the studio sells and where — Pattern Cutting & Sample Making, London & Kent — and the description covers the trade work and the local work in one line. Because every service has its own page, the site can appear for a specialist search from a London design studio and for a local one from someone in Gravesend, without the two competing.
Owned outright
The J&O Studio website belongs to the business. The files are theirs, it can be hosted anywhere, and any developer can pick it up and change it. Nothing has to be paid monthly to keep it online.
